Keep your Computer, Spyware-free!

Spyware is one of the worst things that can happen to your computer. Sometimes, the effect of this seemingly harmless spyware can even be more devastating than viruses.

Spyware does not only annoy your head off by bombarding you with pop-up ads and changing your homepage from time to time. It also invades your privacy by keeping track of your surfing habits secretly! With this, you might never know that your personal data such as e-mail address, name and even your bank account is being copied off from your computer system. And when worse comes to worst, it can take over your entire computer system.

Save yourself the effort of repairing your computer from these menaces. Remember, prevention is better than cure. So here are a few simple ways on how you can avoid spyware and keep your computer, spyware-free!

  1. Use an alternate web browser. Sad to say, Windows’ web browser, the Internet Explorer, does not provide enough security for you and your computer. This browser has a large history of security issues and problems that have caused inconvenience to users because of the gaping holes in its security system. So it is wise to switch another web browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Opera. It would be best if you would lock down Internet Explorer, even if you have no plans of using it.

  2. Think twice about downloading and installing. Remember, when downloading any software or data, it is your responsibility because you are willing to do so. You cannot blame the software provider once it created damage in your computer. The best thing to do is to read and research about the software, program or website before downloading. If you find out that there have been negative remarks and feedback from that website or program, do not download.

  3. Be watchful of your e-mails. Spyware sometimes bind themselves into the attachments of e-mail or even in e-mail itself. Be on the alert. Do not take time to open suspicious e-mails with a strange subject and especially if it came from someone you don’t know. Place it directly in the trash bin and delete it at once.

  4. Look out for suspicious URLS and links. Again, be vigilant about links being sent to you through instant messages or emails, especially if a stranger sent the link. Usually, these links are accompanied by a short message persuading you to click the link as well. Phrases such as, “OMG. This is so amazing…” is found side by side with the link. Basically, never be a daredevil and don’t click that link!

  5. Use anti-virus and anti-malware software. These are your ultimate shield and armor to protect your computer from those digital villains. Remember to keep them updated, so that even the latest virus or spyware will not get through your computer system. Also, scan your computer regularly. Even if some of these wretched programs get through your system, with just a click of a button, you can remove them.
